Giving you more options for how, when, and where you travel.
What is Transportation Demand Management (TDM)?
Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is about giving you more options for how, when, and where you travel.
Instead of building more roads, TDM focuses on maximizing the capacity of our existing infrastructure by providing smarter alternatives to driving alone. This means reliable information and choices regarding:
- Mode: Carpooling, vanpooling, taking the bus, biking, or walking.
- Time: Traveling outside of peak rush hours to avoid gridlock.
- Route: Taking a less congested path to your destination.
- Location: Finding ways to work closer to home or working remotely.
Why promote transportation demand management?
Federal, state, and local governments support TDM programs—like RideShare—because they offer a high return on investment for the community. Here is why:
- Lower Commuting Costs
Save money on fuel, parking, vehicle maintenance, and daily travel expenses.
- Improved Access and Mobility
Expands transportation options for residents who may not have access to a personal vehicle or prefer alternatives.
- Quality of Life Benefits
Less driving stress, more productive or relaxing commute time, and healthier travel choices.
- Environmental and Air Quality Improvements
Fewer single-occupancy vehicle trips reduce emissions and energy use.
- Reduced Infrastructure and Public Costs
Lower long-term demand for road expansion and parking construction.
Our program covers anyone who lives or works in the following areas: cities of Buena Vista, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton and Waynesboro; and the counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Bath, Fluvanna, Greene, Highland, Louisa, Nelson, Rockbridge and Rockingham. Our database consists of hundreds of registered commuters with new commuters registering every day. It is possible that other commuters seeking to share a ride may contact you. Please note that RideShare does not sell, share, or trade the information you provide.
